Amazon PPC Bidding: Down Only, Up and Down, or Fixed?

A bidding strategy changes how Amazon can use your bid in an auction. It does not replace a budget, a relevant product listing or a commercial target. Before switching strategies, write down what you are testing and what evidence would justify keeping the change.
Understand the three approaches
For Sponsored Products, dynamic down only can lower bids for opportunities Amazon considers less likely to convert. Dynamic up and down can raise or lower bids based on conversion likelihood. Fixed bidding does not make that automatic conversion-based adjustment. Amazon also describes rule-based options for eligible campaigns; this article focuses on the three approaches above. A base bid is not the whole configuration
Review placement adjustments and any other enabled bid controls before interpreting the amount entered in the bid field. Fixed bidding can still be combined with placement adjustments. Do not confuse a base bid, an adjusted auction bid and the CPC eventually reported. The limits and controls available should be checked in your current marketplace and campaign settings.
Choose a test question, not a favourite label
Our editorial framework starts with a specific question. For example: “Can this campaign capture additional relevant traffic while staying within our contribution target?” That is more useful than assuming up-and-down bidding always produces growth or down-only bidding always solves efficiency.
Illustrative planning example: a seller wants to compare a current strategy with another approach. Before the test, record the promoted products, bids, placement settings, budget, prices and stock conditions. Agree on a review period and the level of spend the business can tolerate. These are planning choices, not guaranteed experiment controls.
Change fewer things at once
Amazon’s dynamic bidding guide recommends monitoring performance and limiting simultaneous changes when testing strategies. It also discusses reviewing targets and adjusting bids according to campaign goals. Source: Amazon Ads dynamic bidding guide.
In our suggested review, compare spend, attributed sales, CPC and conversion behaviour alongside ACoS or ROAS. Keep a note of promotions and stock disruptions. If price, creative, budget and bidding all change together, a subsequent improvement cannot reasonably be attributed to the bidding switch alone.
Make the next decision explicit
- Keep: results fit the stated objective and economics.
- Refine: some targets or placements merit separate attention.
- Pause or reverse: spend exceeds the agreed test tolerance or the commercial case no longer holds.
These are decision prompts rather than automatic rules. Judge the campaign in context, and avoid treating one short reporting window as a universal verdict on a bidding strategy. For help reviewing the settings, explore our Amazon PPC management service.
